Riding in a tuk tuk (or autotaxi) is a fundamental part of the Indian experience. While these three-wheeled vehicles can surely be found in many places across the globe, India takes them to an extreme level. Pretty much every other vehicle on the road here is a tuk tuk, and pretty much anytime you step out onto a public street you’ll be offered a ride in one.
Prices – like so much else in India – are negotiable per ride. Sometimes you can just take a short single trip, others you can keep the same driver for a full day.
For reasons you’ll see in this video, using tuk tuks for transportation is highly recommended over trying to drive yourself. The roads are packed full with all kinds of vehicles (bicycles, heavy trucks, donkey-pulled carriages, camels, etc.) and there are apparently no actual rules of the road – just try not to hit anything and get where you’re going.
I decided to film a few of our rides – one in Agra and one in Jaipur – to give an idea of the chaos. Enjoy!
