Similar to many other places through the world, mopeds/motorbikes are the most common form of personal transportation on the island of Bali. For the grand total of about $60,000 Indonesian Rupiah (~$3.85 USD) per day, you can rent one yourself and join in on the action.
For 2 days in the town of Ubud, that’s exactly what we did! Once you get past the fear of driving on the unfamiliar roads (with unfamiliar unspoken rules) mopeds are an incredibly convenient way to get around. We chose to pick one up in Ubud to visit several terraced rice paddies & rainforest waterfalls in the surrounding countryside, but really you can get one almost anywhere.
Convenience aside, driving a moped on these roads is definitely an adventure in itself. We decided to film one of our trips – from a rural spot near a waterfall back to our hotel in the heart of town – to show what it’s like.
We start off on some lesser used (and very bumpy) rural roads, then gradually get to busier and busier spots. Close encounters of all kinds – other bikes/cars, a city bus, trucks, cows, we even get barked at by a dog at 02:40! If you’ve ever wondered what its like to drive a moped in Indonesia, this is for you – enjoy!
