These days, Nara Japan is famous for one major thing. Wild, yet tame deer roam throughout the entire city among the crowds of tourists. For 100 yen ($0.75 USD) you can buy “deer crackers” to hand feed them yourself. The deer have even learned to “bow” in in order to ask for some (when they are being polite, some will also head-butt or nip).
Beyond the deer, Nara is also full of amazing historical temples dating back to the 8th century, when it was the capital of Japan. You can see a Shinto shine with a 1,000 year old tree and over 3,000 stone lanterns (Kasuga Taisha), a Buddhist temple boasting a 15m (49 ft) tall statue (Todai-ji), a five-storied pagoda, and much more.
Enjoy this video of our day trip exploring the sights of Nara – of course, featuring the many many deer!
