Continuing our journey around India’s Golden Triangle, we took a train ride from Agra to Jaipur. The train ride was scenic – though the safety standards aren’t exactly what you’ll find in the rest of the world. Don’t fall out!
Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan in India, and – like the rest of the region – is full of history going back centuries. The city is nicknamed “the Pink City” due to the dominant color scheme of many buildings. None are more prominent than Hawa Mahal.
Hawa Mahal is a palace built from red and pink sandstone, built in 1799 along the outer edge of Jaipur’s City Palace complex. The facade is five-stories high and contains a latticework of 953 individual windows. The intent for this design was to allow royal ladies to observe the streets below without being seen – today, it is a popular (and can’t miss) tourist attraction in the city. Have a look for yourself!
After exploring the palace, you can also cross the street to have some chai and food at one of several restaurants with a great view.
And some bonus photos: our hotel in Jaipur was not far from Hawa Mahal, and also had a rooftop terrace. While we couldn’t see Hawa Mahal from our roof, we did have a great view of the City Palace and the surrounding hills.
