Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned construction of the Red Fort in 1638, when he decided to move his empire’s capital from Agra to Delhi. Today, this gigantic complex (200+ acres enclosed by over 1.5 miles of wall) is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Delhi.
We took a tuk tuk ride from our hotel in “New Delhi” over to the neighborhood of “Old Delhi” to visit the fort. While not everything is fully preserved (and the old water features are now dry) the fort remains a very impressive example of Mughal architecture. You can also see several European colonial-style buildings, remnants of the British Colonial occupation.
