Leading up to my (Clint’s) 35th birthday in September, we eventually knew we’d be in Queenstown on the day of. So, a few days before we started asking locals what we should do to celebrate.
On several occasions we were told “you’ve got to do the TSS Earnslaw,” so we decided to take the recommendation. And the locals did not steer us wrong.
The TSS Earnslaw is a historic, coal-powered steamship originally built in 1912, and still operating as a scenic cruise vessel to this day.
And by “still operating,” I mean the original coal steam engine still powers the boat.
But exploring the historic ship is not all there is with this attraction. First off, the cruise route takes you down the spectacular Lake Whakatipu, departing from downtown Queenstown heading all the way to the far end. You get fabulous views of the surrounding mountains the whole way.
Did I mention there is a full bar on board?
At the far end of the lake, you arrive at the Walter Peak High Country Farm – a working sheep farm well away from the city, and complete with a gourmet restaurant.
Then, the main event – an all you can eat, gourmet BBQ buffet. Complete with a salad bar, warm sides bar, cheese/cracker bar, dessert trays, and 6 different grilled meat dishes (side note – in New Zealand, “BBQ” just means meat cooked on a grill). We definitely got our money’s worth here!
Before heading back on the boat, you are entertained by a demonstration of the farm dogs’ sheep herding abilities. You have to walk a bit to get to the amphitheater, which is kind of a good thing after all the food!
All in all we will echo the multiple recommendations we received for this experience – if you’re ever in Queenstown, the Earnslaw is an absolute must-do!
