Sakura – or Cherry Blossom – season is a pretty big deal in Japan. The government actually publishes a cherry blossom forecast to help people plan!
While the specific dates for peak blooms fluctuate every year, the best time to view Japanese cherry blossoms in bloom is typically in late March/early April.
We were fortunate enough to be visiting Japan for the beginning of “peak blooms” in the southern region of the country.
While the beginning of our trip saw smaller blooms (and, as we later learned, more plum blossoms than cherry), but by the time we left it was peak season.
We even got to witness a Hanami in Tokyo – on the first day of the peak, people across the city took the day off early to bask in the beauty of the blossoms.
Even if you’ve seen cherry blossoms before, witnessing the peak in Japan is still truly something to behold. Enjoy these pictures – hopefully they do some justice to the glory!
