It wasn’t entirely our fault…
No way to sugarcoat it, we overate during our stay in Germany. Beyond a lack of self-control, there were a few reasons for this. For one, it was exciting to enjoy dishes I grew up on after several months of exotic Singaporean, Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, and Indian cuisines. For two, we were kind of “tagging along” to my parents’ vacation, so we ate out at restaurants much more than we’d normally do on our backpacking budget. For three, we were visiting a ton of relatives and friends – again more restaurants, but also “Coffee & Cake” and/or “Vesper” on a near-daily basis. Finally, and probably most importantly, everything was just so good.
Sausages and schnitzel everywhere:
Spätzle – with cheese or meat and gravy:
Regional favorites, like Maultasche, Rouladen, Knödel, and Sauerkraut:
Cold-cuts, cheeses, breads, pickles, and homemade Schnapps for Vesper:
Homemade cakes of every variety:
For some healthy(ish) options, a few salads and soups – including the excellent in-season asparagus (Spargel) soup:
And, of course, pretzels upon pretzels upon pretzels:
This is just a sampling of all the German food we packed in during our time in the country. Admittedly, we did try Indian, Mexican, and Kebabs during our last week in Nürnberg – but other than that it was all German food all the time during our stay. We even tried some currywurst:
All in all, 10 pounds (conservatively) well-added – we did need to increase our step counts after we left the country, but it was worth every bite.
