Today Nürnburg is most well-known for its history under the Nazi regime (and the so-named trials after WWII; however the city has a long and extensive history dating back to the 11th century.
The city is spread out with over 500k inhabitants these days, but the “Old Town” in the center is still full of Medieval charm. The whole area is still surrounded by a wall, and the Imperial Castle is still intact.
We spent several days exploring Nürnburg’s Old Town (and surrounding districts) on our visit. A trip to the Nazi Party Rally Grounds started out with an interesting exploration of history (the main exhibition is actually under renovation) –
– but turned into a day at the Spring festival! Everything here was actually setup on the old parade grounds.
We also made a visit to the Imperial Castle, museum, and tower:
And didn’t forget to spend time wandering around through the beautiful Old Town itself.
Nürnberg may not be as big or famous as Bavaria’s other main city of Munich; but it is definitely worth a visit on any adventure to Germany. Hopefully these photos speak for themselves; but (as usual for this blog) they only do some measure of justice to the true beauty and charm of the city!
