For the second leg of our journey, we decided to go someplace nice and warm – at least warmer than Australia in the wintertime. On advice from our hosts and others we met in Australia, we headed to Fiji. On additional advice we made an effort to get out to the smaller, more remote islands.
Fiji is a remarkable place – a country of under 1 million, consisting of over 300 separate islands in the South Pacific. 2 of the islands are relatively large, but the majority are quite small and remote.
We spent 4 days in Nadi on one of the main islands (Viti Levu), then another 11 at a homestay on Nanuya Lailai Island in the Yasawa chain (zoom out on that map to get an idea of how remote it is). This island has a permanent population of about 60 people, most of whom are part of an extended family unit living in a small village.
We had some great adventures while in the country (sea-cave spelunking, swimming with sharks, amazing snorkeling) to be featured in future posts, so stay tuned! For now we’ll highlight some photography of the amazing natural landscape. Clear blue water, immaculate palm lined beaches, and undisturbed natural landscapes galore. Enjoy!
