Wollongong, NSW
We’ve seen several spectacular National and State parks during our time in New South Wales; however you don’t really need to go far to discover natural beauty in Australia. Case in point is this hike to Brokers Nose Lookout near Wollongong (also see what’s just beyond the backyard of our hosts’ home).
The trailhead for this hike is an unmarked path off the side of the Princes Highway (across from this parking lot to be exact – don’t worry there is parking on the trail-side as well).
From there you’re immediately into the jungle, heading up. There’s no set pathway up to the lookout, instead there is a network of connected trails – normally used by fire brigades to combat bushfires. Along the way you cross (and even walk up/down!) several creeks, and have some good “twitching” opportunities. We added a Black Cockatoo to our Birdwatching List on this hike!
After about a half hour of hiking uphill, you arrive at Brokers Nose Lookout. This offers an excellent view of Wollongong, Lake Illawara, and the surrounding coastline. Thanks to Jeff, our hosts’ Brother-in-law for the photography assist!
Also – we took this hike on July 12, which is Kaitlin’s birthday! Guess how old she is?
