Hiking to Wairere Falls – Tallest in the North Island

Just a short drive (through green hills and sheep pastures, of course) from the Hobbiton Movie Set is a difficult but impressive day hike to Wairere Falls – the tallest waterfall in New Zealand’s North Island.

Standing 153 meters (501 feet) tall, the falls are a sight to see. The path to get there is not for the faint-hearted and involves climbing uphill over natural boulders, over bridges, and up large staircases in the forest. After making the trek, however, we’d say the payoff is worth it.

Even if you disagree, consider this video one where we hiked so you don’t have to. Enjoy!
