Hailing from the flatlands of Ohio in the Midwestern USA; we weren’t exactly familiar with a “funicular” before we saw one in action. However, this is one of the options within Prague’s extensive public transit network – intrigued, we knew we had to give it a try.
Essentially, the best way I can describe a funicular is a train/elevator hybrid. Two trains sit at either end of a straight rail line, rising directly up a steep slope. The trains fill with passengers either at the bottom or top stations, then move in unison (one going up, one going down – like the counterweight on an elevator) along the track. Sometimes – as is the case in Prague – there are additional stations/stops along the slope as well. It looks like this:
If you’re interested to learn more about funiculars I’d recommend Wikipedia; however if you want to know what it’s like to ride one in Prague I’d recommend this video. Stay tuned after the ride for some bonus footage of us exploring Petrin park (at the top of the hill) and walking our way back down to the city. Tree-lined trails, picturesque views, and some “interesting” diversions along the way.
