Another exciting excursion from our homestay at Sunrise Lagoon on Nanyua Lailai Island in Fiji’s Yasawa Group.
This was originally going to be a normal snorkeling trip where they take you (again in the 12 foot fiberglass boat) to various spots around the island; however some of the other guests there wanted to take the “swimming with sharks” option instead.
It took Kaitlin some convincing (“the sharks are friendly, won’t bite, once in a lifetime opportunity, etc.) but ultimately she agreed, and we went along.
Our host drove the boat to a spot where the coral reef drops off into the deeper ocean, which is the territory of the Whitetip Reef Shark. We got in the water, and after spearing a couple of fish (for bait as well as dinner later on) we started looking.
Very soon, we saw some sharks! In total we saw about 6 or 7 in our ~45 minutes of snorkeling. We caught 4 on tape – one Clint was even able to follow for about 2 minutes!
Enjoy this video of our shark encounter, with some bonus footage of corals in the area.
Thanks for your blog, nice to read. Do not stop.
