Kaikoura – South Island, NZ
After our time in Marlborough wine country we headed south down the coast. We stopped at a free campsite next to the ocean on the Kaikoura Penninsula. The plan was to hike the area’s famous walking track (which we did, stay tuned for a future seal-filled video) but we also got a pleasant surprise – a seafood BBQ kiosk right next to the camping area:

Right off the bat, “BBQ” in Australia/New Zealand just means “cooked on a grill” – there’s no barbecue sauce involved. That said, this little place was boasting a variety of freshly-caught seafood, cooked right on the grill as you order.
We decided on a half crayfish (i.e. Rock Lobster) fresh out of this cooler:

This was served with rice, salad, and garlic bread. The shop also had a Cioppino (Italian seafood stew) on special – including fresh fish, paua, mussels, and prawns – we got one of these as well. Upon ordering, the seafood went right onto the grill. From there, right to our table by the beach.

The kiosk doesn’t look like much, but no joke this was the best – and probably freshest – seafood either of us ever had. A perfect stop before heading out to hike the peninsula. Even better, it was right by our free camping!
