Before you say anything, yes I checked and this is indeed the World’s Largest Blowhole – at least according to the local tourism website. Before you say anything else, this is a geographical feature.
The Kiama Blowhole is an oceanside sea cave with a 2.5 meter-wide hole in the ceiling. As waves crash into the back wall of the cave, water can shoot upward through the hole. It’s not always “working,” but under the right sea conditions (per locals a strong easterly wind, high tide, and recent rainfall which we’ve had a lot of) the blowhole is capable of spraying 50+ liters of water nearly 100 feet in the air.
Not sure if we witnessed the blowhole’s maximum potential on this day, but it seemed pretty close. Enjoy this video and judge for yourself – I apologize in advance for the wind noise, but I think hearing the blowhole in action is worth it!
