Deoksugung Palace
Smaller than the others, Deoksugung Palace was originally built as a temporary palace for a Joseon prince but became the primary palace for the empire after a Japanese invasion in 1592 – it was the only palace left standing. The palace was also the home of Korea’s last King, who died in 1919. The palace is notable for a high stone wall around the entire complex, as well as some European-style buildings on the grounds (not pictured here). This palace is located in the heart of Seoul, essentially across the street from City Hall.
